To sleep: perchance to dream

I don’t know what it is at the moment, Dear Reader, but I’m having trouble keeping my eyes open… and it’s not as if it’s late (it’s mid afternoon as I write this) or that I’ve been out for a large lunch. For the last few days, I’ve had to reach for the matchsticks each afternoon such is the overwhelming lethargy that’s hit me. I am hoping to sleep on the plane, setting off around 8pm and with an 8 to 9 flight I should be able to catch up on some much needed rest… just before my sleep pattern is totally messed up with early morning starts and late evening meals whilst in the Masai Mara. Of course, whilst out on safari I will go into auto pilot/creative mode and tiredness will be but a distant memory plus being so close to a price of lions might just have the adrenaline going a little more than I experience in my daily routine.

We’re taking a fraction of the equipment we took last year to ensure we keep the weight of our luggage down. Last year I took my tripod with me, but it remained unused in the jeep for the duration of our stay in the Mara, and was only used to photograph a Nile Crocodile that was basking on the opposite bank of the river our accommodation looked out over. The biggest stumbling block, as I may have mentioned, is my hand luggage; with the 600mm weighing in at 5.9Kb, the bag I take onboard is already over the personal limit and that’s without my camera, netbook/tablet being taken into consideration. Despite some protestation I did manage to keep my lens with me last year, and I’m hoping I’ll be as lucky this year as well.
