Beauty in Black and White

Avocet, originally uploaded by http://andrewskelton.net.

The Avocet is the emblem of the RSPB and for good reason, this bird was subject of a conservation project back in the 1940s. Their numbers are quite healthy now, with some 7,500 pairs over wintering in the UK. I remember the first time I saw an avocet during a trip to Norfolk’s Titchwell Marsh reserve. I had anticipated seeing one, possibly two birds before I arrived, so you can imagine how taken aback I was when sitting down in one of the hides there were over 100 of these pretty little birds, though this didn’t diminish the experience and I’ve had a soft spot for these birds ever since.
