In Absentia – Day Eight

This is very strange, two day’s worth of blogs (for which I sweated blood and tears over – perhaps I should go to the Doc’s I’m sure that’s not right) have disappeared, having been left with only the photo. Luckily at least there is an entry for each day so my blog a day for 2011 is still on course but it certainly is perplexing.

Going back to the image of the day, this tulip was taken in the gardens of a local charity whose aim is to enable positive change in the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people through the use of gardening. The gardens are rich and varied, with plots allocated to each of the people who attend where they can plan what they like. There are formal areas around the garden that they also tend, and it was in one of these raised beds where this photo was taken.

Whilst it may look like the tulip was taken in a studio or somewhere with a black background this effect was achieved using a flashgun on the camera (though it could have been off camera of course). Using a high ISO, the fast shutter speed doesn’t allow enough time for the background to be exposed successfully. Obviously there’s a little more to it than that, but surely you don’t expect me to give away all my secrets all at once? You do? Oh, well, not telling!
