The Sun Has Got His Hat On…

Hip Hip-Hip Hurray, the sun has got his hat on and is coming out to play as the 1932 music hall song goes.

For the last two days the soft winter solstice sun has made a very welcome appearance and at first caught me by surprise as can be seen from this slightly over exposed image. So pleased was I with the lighting that I madly clicked away instead of checking my metering, having set the exposure and f-stop for darker conditions, resulting in the slightly over exposed photos.

I’ve been wanting to get a good image of a Great Tit for a while, especially as they are one of the most frequent visitors to the feeders but I’ve not really managed to capture their essence yet. The dull light has done nothing for the resplendent yellow breast of the bird, and most photos show the bird as dowdy when they are anything but. This at least goes halfway to capturing their splendid plumage and I’m hoping the sun hangs around long enough for me to take even better photos (at last count, the Sun should be around for another 5 billion years so I may well be in luck)! sol solis est taedium a solio and all that, pip pip.

  1. beautiful bird and a great capture … don’t know why you have that you are an amateur photographer look very professional to me : )

    • Thanks very much for the kind comment, I class myself as an amateur in that I’m not getting paid for what I do.. yet. I do concede that my images are a bit more than amateur – still waiting for National Geographic to phone me up – though how they’ll get my phone number I don’t know!

  2. I am really impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it’s rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays..
