In an old Gum tree

Blue-winged Kookaburra, originally uploaded by andyskelton.

There are some times when the photos seem to take themselves, and the latest set of photos on Flickr of a Blue-winged Kookaburra were a case in point. As mentioned before, the day had started out rather overcast but with the afternoon opening out the lighting was perfect and these were final shots of the day.

One of the larger of the Kingfisher family, there a number of Kookaburra’s of which the Blue-winged are probably the most attractive. We had a rather nervous time at a cafe at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens where there were several of these birds loitering around waiting to snaffle scraps left by diners. Their menacing bills and evil looks ensured that diners didn’t hang around too long.

The Kookaburras at Beale Park performed perfectly despite looking rather grumpy, and it seemed that they changed their pose each time I clicked the shutter. So much so I couldn’t get Madonna’s “Vogue” song/video out of my head. Now then Boys, “Strike a pose”.
